How can we tell if an IRS letter & it's toll free number is from the IRS?

    I agree. One of my clients received a letter on April 15 dated 4/25/16 and it was valid.

      Valid letter

      This letter appeared to be legit from the gitgo, especially in relation to recent, known IRS problems with online ID theft issues.

      ( Reverse phone lookups are generally a waste of time. )

      My guess is, if you call the number provided, you will indeed reach a "real" IRS representative.
