    medical doctor internship

The intern lives in one State, but flies every other week end to her job at a hospital to another state to do her internship.
Does she get to take any of her airfare? Does she get to take any of her living expenses while working
there? Not sure. since she is not considered a Doctor till she finishes, it is a new carrier for her. Some one please answer regarding
    this situation.

    It Depends

First, does she have a work history where she lives. She needs this to establish her tax home. Second is her position at the distant hospital expected to last 1 year or less. If yes to both I think you are good to go with expenses. If no to either, then forgetaboutit.

Does she get paid to do this?

How long is this expected to last?

How long has she been doing this so far?

        Random thoughts

Sounds seriously like her tax home is her work home is the location of the internship.

Most internships last longer than a year? ? ?

In any case, rest assured the state where she is working will want their (complete?) piece of the tax pie.

Is there a real justification, other than personal convenience, for two plane flights/week ? ?

One would think there is plenty of relevant tax advice "out there" for medical students in a (somewhat) similar situation.

To further address the issue of expenses: Reference TheTaxbook tab 10-3 to clearly address your scenario in addition to the IRS website.

Also, you need to address if the intern gets a form 1099 or W2.

            internship

My son in law is a medical Doctor and once he finished his medical degree, and started his internship, he got paid. He was actually doing work and getting paid for it so I would at least consider that he might get his expenses traveling back and forth.

Was it treated as a W-2 or form 1099?

As you know the test rules for either would have to be met.

Her tax home is where she is working. She is not away from her tax home to work. If she chooses to fly someplace else to visit family or vacation, that is personal.

If she has a second job in another place, you will have to look at more details.
