    Deaceased taypayer

Client died before I could get his tax return to him. there is a balance due on fed and state. no spouse, no children. TP was in nursing home, told nephew to make sure taxes were paid, but death was not expected. Who signs?, do I have to wait for a pers rep? I really believe that he had everything taken care of and there will be no estate. If nephew is on checking account, could nephew sign the efile authorization?

You could file an extension and the nephew could attach a check for the amts due. No signature required. Then whoever is appointed personal representative can sign the return later, or the 8879 if e-filed.
