    You must file Form 1040X within three years from the date you filed your original tax return or within two years of the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

      Also note that if you file prior to the tax return deadline it's considered as-if you filed on the tax return deadline. So if they filed Jan 31, 2012 they're past three years as of Feb 26, 2015. But the return would be considered filed Apr 15, 2012 so they're still good through Apr 15, 2015.

        And if you file an extension it's three years from the date filed NOT the extended date. If they filed an extension for the 2011 year, that would bring the time to filing the 2011 return to October 15, 2012. If they filed the return June, 2012, the statute expires June 20, 2015 not October 15, 2015.

          TP filed ext for 2011 then filed tax return on 6/1/2012

          TP filed 2011 TY extension then filed tax return on 6/1/2012. So TP needs to file an amended 2011 by 6/1/2015, correct?
