    ID Number

You should complete the Joint return and form W-7.

Enclose all the required identification for the person requireing the ID number and mail the tax return along with the completed form W-7 to the address shown in the instruction section of form W-7.

It will take about 2 or 3 months to process. Good Luck.
The below link should take you to the forms. Scroll down the forms list to find W-7 form

Access IRS forms, instructions and publications in electronic and print media.

Yep that is what you will have to do is the W-7 and file with tax return. I did this for a customer. Did 5 W-7s for his wife and children. Need all the paperwork listed in the instructions to prove they are from mexico.

Before filing a tax return with a W-7, it would be wise to contact Social Security and see if the spouse is eligible to receive a SS#. This will depend on the type of vise issued to her by the State Department. If she is not eligible, then the W-7 for an ITIN is in order.

If the W-7 is needed, then the original documents, such as birth certificate or passport, have to be sent and not copies. The IRS will return them.
