    IRS Notice CP80

A client received IRS notice CP80 stating that there is a credit of $939 that hasn't been applied to any returns yet and that 2010 tax return hasn't been filed. However, the return was electronically filed in 2012 (extension was filed in March 2011). The client is asked to file 2010 return so the credit can be applied.

Before looking into it, I want to check if anyone else has seen a notice like this before? With all the tax scams going on nowadays, this might be one of them.

    Thanks,

CP80 tells you we credited payments and/or other credits to your tax account for the form and tax period shown on your notice. However, we haven't received your tax return.

How could the 2010 return have been electronically filed in 2012? We cannot Efile prior year returns and in 2012 that return was not current year. It would have had to been mailed in.

I THINK that IRS started accepting prior year returns late in the year, like December of 2012. Thus some software companies had that capability.
