      Blame it on Congress

... if the IRS ever wanted to use this to raise revenue, like they are doing with EIC Due Diligence audits ...
Sorry, you can't blame that one on the IRS. The increase in EIC Due Diligence fines were mandated by Congress in the Korean Free Trade Bill as a partial offset to the revenue lost by the free trade agreement itself.

Who do you suppose came up with this little gem? Do you think Barney was talking to Chuckie and said "you know these tax preparers are getting away with murder scalping our treasury with lying and cheating? Don't they know that's our job?".

Remember back in the 1960's/70's the famed Peter Principle?

I get the impression this Miz Hawkins is living proof that it still applies.

And the beat goes on. . .2015 version

Interesting discussion. . . aka "a blast from the past."

IIRC, the 2014 version on a similar topic got a bit "heated" and then vanished into TTB cyberspace perpetuity.

All this brings up the question about 8878. I got every one of my extenders to sign the form. Is it not required? They are never here to input their own PIN..

3 - as you say "I got every one of my extenders to sign the form." seems like you would be covered

Rightly or wrongly, the open people who filed/signed a Form 8878 for me were those who owed a balance due with their Form 4868.

For everyone else, I had either a written (email) or verbal communication authorizing me to file their 2014 extensions.

I did not, nor have I ever, "automatically" filed an extension for any client.

                  #1 above is dated 2014.

                  #2 excerpt is as follows:

                  • Form 4868, and
The taxpayer is not authorizing an electronic funds withdrawal.
                  Do not complete Form 8878.

                  • Form 4868, and
                  • Authorizing an electronic funds withdrawal, and
                  • The ERO is using the Practitioner PIN method.
Complete Form 8878,Parts I, II, and III.
