    Bart and Others

A slick little piece of software for 50 bucks saved me from a horrible, endless round with sophisticated software and hours on the phone for support. Even then it didn't work - no way to make corrections.

For W-2s and 1099s, I drive down to Chattanooga and get this program from BusiForms.
Nice guy who used to be in the business tax prep software big time before he sold out to a bigger company in the Midwest.

    Other W-2 1099 Programs

    Check out Taxtools by CFS.
http://www.taxtools.com/ go to online store, then payroll system.
I don't use them as I use Quickbooks, but I use a lot of other CFS programs. You can also buy the supplies from them.

      SS Online

I used the online filing of w'2 last year and it was great. No forms to buy as you print on plain paper and if the social security number is wrong you know it right them. You also have a longer time to submit w2's than the Feb deadline.Only problem is you can't do 1099's but check out e-services as I heard you might be able to file 1099's online there.

        Website

        Sorry, as in OOPS!

In all of the above, I somehow managed to forget to give out the BusiForm website:

Give it a try. After selling out his software, he is finding niche markets for other
        material. Regards, Ron J.

So how do you sign up for the W-2 filing online, particularly if you have several employers that you are doing payroll service for. Any insight and guidance would be appreciated.

So far I have had not real great luck with the e service with IRS.

            Hill?

Snag / His name wasn't Hill by any chance was it? Years ago I had a really great, simple, little W-2 package that I got for about $50 from a guy in Chattanooga. I want to say that his name was Hill, but maybe not. In any case, I believe the name of his company was Boot Hll Software. It was W-2s and 1099s only, but it was the essence of ease and simplicity to use. I was really crushed when a big company "off" somewhere bought him out.

Anyhow, the big company began immediately to "improve" his product and soon it was quite a bit harder to use. It seems like they later sold out to Greatland of Grand Rapids, Michigan who mucked it beyond all belief and quadrupled the price to $200. It also takes four times as many keystrokes to set up and enter a simple W-2 as the original guy's program in which you simply opened a window and began typing the data. I've been wallowing with them every since, but have vowed by all the eternal gods to break free from this hard software.

              1099 programs

I've been using one from Tax Accounting Systems and the renewal is 39.95, the new product is 49.95. Check out www.taxaccountingsystems.com

It's simple and the support is the guy who designed it (or it was the last time I needed to use it)

If you need it on a network, it's possible, but you have to play with the data save defaults. If you just need it on a local computer, then no worries at all.

Sandy, if you go to the SSA website, you will see a link to Business Services on line
The address is ssa.gov/employer. You make application and they will send you access codes, etc. You can then manage as many payrolls as like. The only draw back is that you have to enter each employee (the employer info will proforma after it's created) and if you already have that data in QuickBooks or elsewhere and if it's alot of employees, then it's alot of repeat work.

What I do like about it is that it tells you right away if the name and soc sec doesn't match, and you don't need forms and envelopes, although you can and will want to print the employee and employer copies.

The only 1099 filing on line I've found is for a fee, but there's one for $3.50 per form, and for a small filing, to have them send it in for you, mail it to the recipient, etc, it can be well worth it. I've used filetaxes.com in the past for this. Don't know if the price has gone up though.

The online W2 filing is limited to employers with 20 forms, but there is also an upload-magnetic media option.

Looks like we're recommending the same program - glad to know that others have found it useful, too!
