    Alien Spouse

I have a new client who lived in FL last year, he married a foreigner in Nov 05, she only has a Alien #, is he not allowed to claim her as a dependent on his tax return?

Or does he file MFS and use the Alien # as the Social Security Number? It's only 8 digits long, so it doesn't really go in the SS field in Pro Series.

I've never had a person marry a Alien (or should I say a Foreign person before, so I'm baffaled on how to do the return.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Alien-No S S #

Your client will have to file as single.
When the wife gets a S S #, or ITIN, client can then file an
    amended return, filing MFJ.

Thank you for getting back to me so soon. So the 8 digit alien number doesn't work?

        Alien No.

No, will not work See Pubs. 3 and 519.
Also go go Google and type in Alien Spouse and see what comes up.

Better yet, put in a "dummy SSN", file MFJ and do a paper return. Print return, white out "Dummy SSN", fill out W-7 application and send to IRS town near Phila. ITIN will be issued. This is the ONLY way to get an ITIN is with a completed tax return.
