    American Idol

Since this is a tax message board, I will ask a tax question. Would you put the prize money won on American Idol on line 21 as a prize from a TV game show, or would you put it on Schedule C, subject to SE tax as income from a trade or profession?

Now the real reason I wanted to talk about American Idol. I have watched the TV show since its first season. I have always felt Kelly Clarkson to be the greatest singer of all contestants, as she is the only one who ever went through the entire season without a single negative comment from Simon Cowell.

This year, most people favor either Chris, Taylor, Kelly Pickler, (who got voted off last night), or Elliot to win. Personally, I like Katherine, as she seems to be the closest to Kelly Clarkson. As a musician, I also appreciate her versatility.

I was the piano player in a rhythm and blues band that became quite popular in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area. I have performed with some great talent over the years. Musicians of this caliber have often thought amongst themselves that the only difference between moderate local success and national fame is marketing and a good break. There are countless unknown musicians nation wide who are every bit as good as the super stars you see on TV. I think American Idol has proven that point.

Well, this week, Katherine sang a song that was made popular by Whitney Houston when she was at her career peek. The judges trashed her for singing a song that was too big for her. Basically telling her that if she can’t be as good as Whitney Houston, she shouldn’t sing the song.

Personally, I thought she did the song justice, and probably was as close to being as good as Whitney as possible. I also know that it is virtually impossible for anyone to sing a song live as good as a studio recording, where they have the ability to edit out all the mistakes.

I have noticed this trend on American Idol that when the contestants try to sing a well known Super Star’s song, they get trashed for daring to think they could possibly be as good. I know literally dozens of local unknown singers who can sing as good or better than many of those who have made it big in the profession. I think there is a subtle prejudice with the judges in this regard. At least for Randy and Simon who are music producers that work with big names in the industry. Yeah, they are looking for new talent to produce, but don’t make it tooooo obvious that good super star quality musicians are a dime a dozen, and that the only reason they are super stars is because of big music industry marketing efforts.

    Any other opinions out there?

    Kelly...

...lost because her last two proformances were very bad. Some people choke when they get too big, this was Kelly's problem. She is a great singer but couldn't handle it.

Kathrine is very good and I hope she wins.

As far as the any money they get for the contest, I believe it would be prize money, line 21. As the group of 10 and the winner later preform, that is income subject to SS.

      Contest money

I didn't realize they would get any actual money for competing in American Idol.

It was time for Kelly Pickler to go home. She will be great in country music and I'm sure that some one will pick her up and work with her in Nashville.

I think Katharine is fantastic. I have liked her from the beginning. You can't win with the judges. A few weeks ago Lisa sang a Kelly Clarkson song and the judges told her that she tried to sound just like Kelly and that if you are going to sing a song that has been made popular by a star you have to make it your own and make it a little different. So this week Katharine sang a Whitney Houston song and made it her own, didn't sound just like Whitney and they said you can't do that to her song. So which every way you go they aren't happy. I thought she did very good and I liked her version of the song.

I LOVE Chris. From the beginning of the auditions, I picked him out. But I don't want him to win. I don't want him put into their mold. He just needs someone to produce him like he is. I loved the way he sang Bryan Adams song.

My daughter has decided that Elliott should win. She feels like Katharine and Chris and Taylor will get deals no matter what the final outcome is. But she says Elliott might not because he isn't a real polished dresser and his teeth need fixing but she thinks this would give him the best chance for a career. I understand her reasoning.

Paris is amazing for 17 but I don't think Paris knows yet what she wants to do and am not sure she really is into a music career as much as her mother and grandmother want her to be. She may in the future go into performing but I'm not sure she is ready now.

I thought Mandisa was as good as Katharine and really thought she would be one of the final 2. I couldn't believe it when she got voted off so early.

Did you know there is a website called dialidol.com that you can go to and it gives an estimation of the voting and who will probably go home. You can do it during the time of voting so you can vote for your favorite a lot so they stay. The results are based on their calls that are made through their website but they feel that it is indicative of the nations voting. So far they have had the bottom 2 or 3 right and close on the one going home.

Okay, now I really must get some 941's done or my clients will put me in jail.

        one more thing

I don't think anyone could top Clay Aiken singing "Unchained Melody" a few seasons ago. That was unbelievable! Kelly should never had tried that song. There are country songs that are love songs. She should have picked one of them.

Andrea Bocielli was so good last night.

These contestants have gotten some great help with their singing from most of the celebrities that have been on, except for Queen.

          Perks

Are the perks taxable? They get a whole lot of free stuff it seems.

We're definitely a Katherine family. Glad to see others feel that way.

I also have watched American Idol since the first show. I Would put any prize money won on American Idol on line 21 as a prize from a TV game show. At this level the contestants are just that.. contestants.. not there to earn money. Katherine is excellent but nothing really super star unique.

At first I thought Chris was just a rock screamer and would not be able to sing a song with words you could hear. The last 3 or 4 shows he has proved me wrong and has shown that he deserves to win the title. Elliot should be the runner up because of talent even though I don't like his personality or appearance.

I think we're looking at Schedule C income. Profit motive is a factor, and every time I see one of the contestants interviewed they go on about how they're going to be a big star. Everybody who participates is in it for the money.

The only thing I could see that would make it not a for-profit self-employment activity is whether there is a "realistic expectation" of making a profit. I think anyone who wins idol does have a realistic expectation of making a profit.

I was in a band called the Bees Knees.

I'm the one on the far left at the piano. Of course, I was a lot younger then.....

Why would anyone call themselves the Bees Knees? When you got other good names out there like The Cats Meow.

The guy who played Tenor Sax for Lamont Cranston started the band with a few other ex Lamont Cranston players. I joined in 1978.

Armando, what do you think this is? A tax discussion? Who do you want to win?

I love the show, but haven't been able to watch it lately. I think the last episode I saw was the Stevie Wonder night. I have no idea who's left. I don't care who wins, as long as it's not that little cowboy guy. Nothing against cowboys, but that guy looked like he borrowed his daddy's big hat and shoes. Is the little cowboy still around?

There are no cowboys, cowgirls, or country singers now in the contest.

                      DVR or VCR

Armando, where is your DVR or VCR? You just record the programs and watch when you can.

Although I do take a break on Tuesday night to watch it, even though we record it too.

Haven't seen a copy of that album in years. They did that shortly after I left. I notice Bonnie Raitt's brother produced that album.

Chris should have won this year. Oh well, he goes down with the other number 4 drop outs: Tamyra Gray and LaToya London were also dropped at the number 4 position - both of whom were favorites to win.
