    IRS delays upcoming renewal period for certain enrolled agents

    Ann. 2010-81, 2010-45 IRB

    IRS has announced that to ensure that the revised user fee to renew enrollment as an enrolled agent is effective before the start of the next renewal period, IRS is delaying until further notice the upcoming renewal period for enrolled agents whose Social Security Numbers or tax identification numbers end in 4, 5, or 6.
    Everybody should pay his income tax with a smile. I tried it, but they wanted cash

    Yes, NAEA emailed the following this morning.

    IRS provided several updates on programs important to enrolled agents this week, and has announced a substantial delay for the enrolled agents renewal program (Announcement 2010-81). In deference to the October 15th deadline, E@lert will not be published today – but will cover each topic in detail next week.

    The renewal cycle delay has several key points that E@lert would like to briefly highlight:

    The EA renewal cycle for EAs with SSNs ending in 4, 5 or 6 which was to begin November 1st has been postponed until further notice;
    The renewal fee (currently $125 for the three-year period) and initial enrollment fee will be substantially reduced – a victory for NAEA’s advocacy on your behalf;
    CPE requirements will remain the same; and
    The delay in renews will not affect an EA’s current status as an enrolled agent in good standing.
    E@lert loves members who proactively meet obligations, but encourages members NOT to renew early this year. OPR does not have a mechanism for refunds, and payments sent in now at the higher fee will be “absorbed” (E@lert’s phrase). Once final regulations are released, EAs will have adequate time to renew.

    Enjoy your weekend and look for additional updates from NAEA regarding this issue and others next week.
