I am not aware of any changes regarding "new" PTINs. Those who already have PTINs will now need to pay an annual fee.

IRS will be coming out with an on line application soon; was suppose to be mid Sept.

at which time you will have to reregister your pin and pay the registration fee. If you all ready have a pin you will keep the same number
Believe nothing you have not personally researched and verified.

I do not think they mentioned the year. Maybe mid Sept of 2015
Everybody should pay his income tax with a smile. I tried it, but they wanted cash

              No

The IRS suspended issuing PTINs through the former channels a few weeks ago in anticipation of opening up the new method of registration.

                Renewing existing PTIN ?

It was my understanding that for those who already have a PTIN they would keep the same number but would have to pay the (annual) fee, and then for the upcoming filing season only submit the paperwork as if they were submitting a new application.

I looked up the new form W-12.

I do not find any place to give them the PTIN number that you already have. Did I miss something?

I figure they will see that you had a PTIN when they process your application, and may issue the same PTIN that you had. If IRS gives me a new PTIN, I figure I could change that in my software in about 10 seconds. No big deal.

                      Attempted online PTIN registration issues

I have successfully created a PTIN user "account" online using the website referenced ( https://rpr.irs.gov ) on page 3 of the Form W-12 instructions.

Upon logging in, I eventually am instructed If you have a social security number, select "PTIN Sign-up (With SSN)" then Click the appropriate link below to begin your PTIN application.

But there are currently no "links below" (other than a functioning "previous" button), so I don't know if the online registration system is operative or not.

The W-12 instructions seem to indicate one can both apply for (update) the PTIN and presumably pay the fee online at the same time.

Time will tell if that is correct.......

At a recent seminar we were told it is unsure yet whether we can keep the number we have or if everyone, even preparers that already have one will need a new PTIN.

It's unknown until this third party has a system up and running.

                          Useful PTIN registration information

I just talked with IRS rep re online PTIN registration:

1 - Online system is not yet functioning, but is supposed to be "by late September."

2 - The entire process ("renewal" or new user registration) can be done online.

3 - IRS will verify all information provided with the PTIN application. If you already have an existing PTIN, it will automatically be reassigned to you.

4 - Payment of annual fee ($64.25 this year) can be made online, using credit/debit card etc.

I assume this will be the same system in place to handle future annual PTIN renewals.

Looks as if the online process will be the simplest.

                          Hope this helps!!!

The IRS should know both your SSN and PTIN and has them cross referenced to each other.
